St. Cloud Times • Mississippi health improving, but new threats emerge

A report on the health of the Mississippi River contains some good news, but also highlights some emerging threats that pose a risk to its water quality, aquatic life and recreational value.

The 2016 State of the River report includes a number of measurements of the river’s health, from how well its fish and wildlife are thriving to the types of pollutants found in its waters.

Overall, many of the indicators show progress in the last few decades. But there are also causes for concern, said Lark Weller of the National Park Service and Trevor Russell of Friends of the Mississippi River, the two organizations that produced the report.
